Immune System Support

Immune System Support

By Lew Olson • January 2002 Newsletter
A strong, well-functioning immune system is vital for maintaining good health. There are two common problems that can occur with the immune system. You can have an over active immune system or an immune system that does not offer enough immunity against bacteria, viruses and foreign substances.

An over active immune system causes the body to attack “normal” substances in the body as well as bacteria, viruses and foreign substances. Autoimmune diseases result from an over active immune system. Some of these diseases include allergies, hypothyroid, Addison’s and Cushing’s diseases, vitiligo, lupus, hemolytic anemia and uvitis (for more information on autoimmune diseases, see the Fall 1998 newsletter).

Veterinarians frequently prescribe steroids to help suppress the immune system. However, long-term use of steroids can create more health problems. These include increased thirst, elevated blood sugar, fluid retention, behavioral changes, slower healing times, Cushing’s disease, muscle wasting and leaching of calcium from the bones.
Some suggested supplements for an over active immune system include the following:
Salmon Oil capsules
The Omega-3 fatty acids found in Salmon Oil help to regulate the immune system. The maximum dose per 10 pounds of body weight per day is 1,000 mg, divided into two doses. Minimum dose would be 1,000 mg per 30 pounds of body weight a day.
Vitamin E capsules
Omega-3 fatty acids need vitamin E to work well and a dose of 100 IU of vitamin E per 1,000 mg of salmon is helpful.
A strong immune system can be genetic. Much of the strength of the system depends on the colostrum intake as a puppy. Additionally, proper diet and exercise also contribute to the health of the immune system.
There are several ways you can help boost an immune system. These include:
Vitamin C with Bioflavanoids
Vitamin E
– A good B Vitamin complex
– Echinacea
– Astralagus
– Goldenseal
– Dandelion
– Burdock
