Lew Olson's newly revised edition is filled with an abundance of new topics and information. Whether you are new to home feeding or a seasoned raw feeder, have a senior dog or a new puppy, a pregnant mom or a toy breed, this book presents all the information you need to make the best nutritional decisions for your dog.

In 1998, my Rottweiler was diagnosed with lymphosarcoma cancer. This news was devastating to me so I frantically began researching for whatever information I could find about this type of cancer.  After receiving the diagnosis, I changed my dog’s diet to an all-raw diet with raw meaty bones, muscle meat and organ meat and I started searching for a quality supplement that would help support his immune system.  I was hoping to find a convenient, ‘all-in-one’ product that I could simply add to his food, but could not find one.

I found a few formulas that had several of the ingredients I needed, but the amounts of the ingredients were too low to support my dog’s condition.  While I continued my search for the ideal product, I purchased each of the vitamins I needed separately and mixed them myself.  This way I knew my dog was getting the dosages of each vitamin he needed to help keep his immune system strong.  It was at that point that I realized other people might have a need for the same type of product for their dogs.

I contacted a manufacturing company that was willing to make the product for me, but I had to commit to purchasing 500 pounds of it at a time.  With that information, I contacted an old friend of mine, Mike Liberato, who owned a pet shop.  I told him I was planning to formulate an ‘all-in-one’ immune system support product that contained the levels of all the vitamins needed to support cancer.  I explained the minimum order requirement and asked him if he would be interested in selling the product in his store.

After searching all over for the perfect product and not being able to find it, then Berte’s Immune Blend was born!  The ultimate immune supporting supplement for dogs made with human grade ingredients that contained all the vitamins in the needed doses, and came in a palatable and ‘easy-to-administer’ power became a reality!

I wanted the product to have both water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins in it.  The water-soluble vitamins, Vitamin C and B complex are harder to keep in dry food formulas and do not come in the amounts needed to give the immune system the extra support it needs during illness.  The fat-soluble vitamins, Vitamin A, E and D3 were just as important.  Vitamin E works synergistically with Omega 3 fish oil, and vitamin D3 assists with the uptake of calcium and supports the immune system.

Other important ingredients added included trace amounts of selenium, which help support the immune system and l-glutamine, which supports both muscle tone and the digestive tract.  Also added were animal-based digestive enzymes to help with the digestion of fats and proteins and probiotics to help keep the good flora and fauna bacteria balanced in the body, keep the bad bacteria in check, and promote firm stools.

All the ingredients included in the Berte’s Immune Blend help support the immune system.  The immune system is the first line of defense in both fighting disease and staying healthy.  For dogs with specific health problems such as cancer, autoimmune issues and diseases, or for dogs recovering from illness, I give the Berte’s Immune Blend at full dose. For healthy dogs, I give half the recommended dose.  This is used daily and can be either given once a day or you can split it into two doses daily.  It is important when you first start using this supplement to begin with a lower dose and slowly build up to full dose over a week or two.  I have started puppies on this supplement as early as 4 weeks of age and it is a great supplement for senior dogs!

It comes in an ‘east-to-administer’ powder that you just sprinkle over your dog’s food whether you are feeding a fresh raw or home-cooked diet, or a commercial dog-food diet.  This supplement is incredibly beneficial for any dog dealing with, or recovering from, an illness and can be given to your dog as an extra bonus to help keep them healthy and their immune system strong throughout their lives!
